In Five Years by Rebecca Serle
Genre: Contemporary Fiction / Romance with Magical Realism
Standalone Novel

Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Cohan has her future firmly planned—until one night she wakes up five years ahead, engaged to a different man in an unfamiliar apartment. That vision upends everything she thought she knew, and when someone from that future unexpectedly appears in her present, she must decide what’s real and what she’s willing to risk for a life she didn't see coming.

This emotionally powerful novel blends contemporary romance with a single touch of magical realism and explores the meaning of love, friendship, and destiny .

If you liked:Me Before You, One Day, or The Dinner List, you’ll be swept away by this poignant, book-club favorite that’s equal parts heartache and hope.

A Beautiful Story About the Love We Don’t Always Expect

In Five Years isn’t your typical love story—in fact, it’s more about the kind of love that often gets overlooked: the deep, soul-level friendship between two women. While romantic relationships are present, the heart of this story lies in the family we choose and the bonds that shape our lives.

From the very beginning, you’re hooked by the premise and drawn into trying to figure out how everything will unfold. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, Rebecca Serle flips the script in the best way. The ending was unexpected and emotional—it absolutely pulls at your heartstrings.

That said, a couple of things kept me from giving it a full five stars. There were a few abrupt time jumps that felt a bit jarring, and while I understood why they were there, they momentarily pulled me out of the story. I also found myself wishing for a different ending… but if it had ended the way I expected, it would’ve fallen into the usual trope. And Serle clearly doesn’t do that—thankfully!

Can I give it 4.5 stars? Because that’s exactly where this book lands for me. Unique, touching, and definitely worth the read.
